Letter to the Members
September 2006
Dear SAIEES Members
SAIEA BOARD TO MANAGE SAIEES FROM OCTOBER 2006
My letter to you dd 1 February 2006 refers:
It is with great pleasure that I am able to inform you that the immediate future of SAIEES has been secured! The Board of the Southern African Institute of Environmental Assessment (SAIEA), chaired by SAIEES member Dr Peter Tarr, has accepted the approach made by SAIEES and agreed to take on the management of our Institute. The management changeover becomes effective from 1 October 2006 with Peter replacing yours truly as SAIEES Chair. A copy of the resolution accompanies this letter and will be posted on the SAIEES website in due course.
It is my fervent hope that during this curatorship of SAIEES that it will be possible to find a way to restore SAIEES to a self-managed and financially-stable organization. It is quite clear that there is a need for SAIEES to continue, as evidenced from the continued desire by prospective members to join our ranks. This has always been in stark contrast to the lack of interest by our members to offer their services on the SAIEES Board.
The changeover will not affect the Secretariat or banking arrangements and these will remain in Cape Town and be linked to SAIEA in Windhoek via the SAIEA offices in Noordhoek. Similarly the SAIEES website/newsletter will be retained and updated now that the aforementioned decisions have been made.
I would untruthful if I said that the two years of my term of office as SAIEES Chair have not been disappointing. It has not been easy to keep the Institute afloat without membership involvement. I did not, however, wish to have to accept the alternative option of closing down SAIEES for good!
In closing I would however like to express my sincere thanks to our Secretary, Jeanette Walker, and to our sole Board Member, Cally Henderson, for their support. I wish Peter Tarr and the SAIEA Board every success with their endeavours.
Sincerely,
Bill Harding
Resolution of Southern African Institute of Ecologists and Environmental Scientists. Held at Cape Town on the 14th September 2006.
